Schools Mission

This school will explore current research directions in both active soft matter systems, where dynamics and internal energy consumption drive the system away from equilibrium, as well as novel equilibrium systems made possible by complex order parameter spaces, geometry and topology.

Deadline for Student Applications: March 27th
Registration fee deadline: March 27th
Registration fee: US 400

Financial Aid

The registration fee is US$ 400 and will cover welcome reception, coffee breaks, book of abstracts, excursion and one special dinner. Limited number of students will receive support to participate in the School and they will be selected on the basis of their CV and Recommendation Letters. The support for American students will be given by ICAM and will cover registration fee, accommodation in rooms with triple occupation and part of the air ticket. The support for Brazilian and Latin American students will be given by FAPERJ and CNPq and will cover accommodation in triple rooms. These students may have a reduced registration fee and refunded air tickets depending on the support given by CNPq and FAPERJ.
** Registration fee does not cover meals and lodging

Important
Students: To apply for the school, please fill out the registration form.
Students applying to the 7th I2CAM-FAPERJ Spring School MUST email their CV and Letter of Recommendation to the organizers. There is a proper field on the registration form for that

Funding

This series of schools is co-funded by ICAM and FAPERJ (the state agency of Rio de Janeiro for founding research) and is hosted by the CBPF ( Brazilian Center for Research in Physics)

School Overview

This series of schools is co-funded by I2CAM and FAPERJ (the state agency of Rio de Janeiro for founding research) and is hosted by the CBPF, in Rio de Janeiro.  The first school organized in 2007 was related with topics on Emergent Behavior in Quantum Matter and the 93 participants were supported by FAPERJ, I2CAM, NSF and CAPES. The second I2CAM/FAPERJ focused on Biological Physics was organized from 16-21 March, 2008 with 80 participants. The third School focused on Condensed Soft Matter Physics and was held 17 - 23 May, 2009. The fourth I2CAM/FAPERJ Summer School, focused on Emergent Matter, was held in Rio de Janeiro 6th-12th June, 2010, the fifth I2CAM/FAPERJ focused on Biological Physics was organized from Sept. 30 - Oct. 6, 2012 and the sixth I2CAM/FAPERJ School focused on Quantum Matter was organized from April 21 - 27, 2013.

The seventh I2CAM/FAPERJ school with focus on Soft Matter will be held in Rio de Janeiro, April 20 - 26, 2014. The conference is co-funded by ICAM, FAPERJ, CAPES, CNPq and will be hosted by the CBPF, in Rio de Janeiro.

There will be approximately three lectures per day, in the ICAM format of 60 mins talk + 30 mins discussion that has already been pioneered in the Cargese summer schools. We have funding to support approximately 40 students from North America and from South America. Additional students, coming on their own finance from other locations will also be welcome, in addition to local students from several universities and research centers in and around Rio de Janeiro.

Financial Aid

Full local expenses and substantial airline ticket support will be paid for 10-15 students from the US, and for a limited number of students from ICAM branches outside the US. Substantial support will also be available for students from Brazil and other South American nations. They will be selected on the basis of their CV and Recommendation Letters.
