Professor of Dimensional and Surface Metrology
At the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of the KU Leuven, there is a full-time academic vacancy in the Faculty of Engineering Technology, Department Mechanical Engineering, Campus Group T in the area of Dimensional and Surface Metrology. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent interdisciplinary investigation record and with educational competence within the field of metrology, manufacturing, and mechanical engineering.
Research and education will be located in Leuven. The integration within Campus Group T and the Mechanical Engineering Department offers access to excellent research infrastructure, en well-established international research network, connections to companies and non-profit organizations, a steady supply of talented doctoral students, and a supportive work environment.
The vacancy fits into the research lines “Production Technologies and Systems” of the Mechanical Engineering Department and “Quality Control” of Campus Group T - Sustainable Engineering Research Group. Moreover, complementary expertise is present at the department on manufacturing technologies, machine design, and automation. The Department is involved in a large number of research projects and is also well connected to the industry interfaces of the University and to government-sponsored technology transfer institutes at Flemish and European levels. Over the years, the Department has accumulated a unique research infrastructure supporting our research. The Department is particularly active in spin-off creation, illustrating the socioeconomic relevance of our research. Many of these spin-offs are technology leaders in their fields and their products and services have world-wide reputation.
Teaching duties will take place primarily at Campus Group T of the Faculty of Engineering Technology. This is a newly established Faculty that operates in a multi-campus context. Campus Group T is an internationally oriented campus with both Dutch- and English-language bachelor, master and PhD programs in Engineering Technology. Yearly, more than 1800 students enroll in the Bachelor and Master in Engineering Technology programs at campus Group T.

Modern manufacturing involves the production of products with increased complexity at ever tighter tolerances and with targeted surface textures. This presents increasing challenges on the development and improvement of new metrology concepts that allow robust, traceable measurements and quality control. Examples of such measurement challenges comprise complex internal structures made by additive manufacturing, and micro-features with tolerances in the nano-range. Moreover, the need for increased productivity calls for high measuring speeds as well as portable and traceable in-process metrology.
The envisaged research will therefore focus on dimensional and surface metrology of complex parts, such as micro-parts, additive manufactured workpieces, and sheet metal parts using advanced and multi-sensor systems. It will moreover address traceable in-process measurements that allow real-time monitoring of dimensional and/or surface quality during manufacturing operations.
You will develop a research programme at an international level in the field of welding technology, focusing on technologies based on melting (electric arc, laser welding, etc.). Your expertise in the field of production engineering, metallurgy and materials science allows you develop such a programme(supplementary/additional) with existing research lines and expertise in the research group welding engineering.
You develop direct collaboration both within and beyond the research departments (mechanical engineering, material science).
You strengthen and develop the national and international collaboration of the research group, in particular with industry, and help to promote and expand them. You actively contribute to the development of future research projects of the group.
You are capable of acquiring competitive funding.
You aim for excellence in your research, resulting in the development of the research group.
You publish in leading national and international journals, acquire resources for research, and develop international collaboration and supervise master theses and PhDs.
You provide high-quality education within the domain of metrology, manufacturing, and mechanical engineering in the Bachelor and Master programmes on electromechanical engineering technology. You contribute to the pedagogic project of the Faculty of Engineering Technology by coaching Master and PhD students. The educational activities can be located at various campuses, yet primarily at Campus Group T Leuven.
You develop your teaching in accordance with the KU Leuven’s vision on activating and researched based education, and make use of the possibilities for the educationalist professionalization offered by the faculty and the university.
You are prepared to provide scientific, social and internal services and are willing to provide services to the Government and industry in the context of applied research assignments.
You have a PhD in Engineering Technology or Engineering Science - Mechanical Engineering or a similarly related degree, and a PhD whereby the subject of your PhD thesis was related to the research field (e.g. metrology).
You have a strong research profile. The quality of your research is proven by publications in prominent leading international journals, books and conference proceedings. International experience is an important advantage.
You have demonstrable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.
You possess organisational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership capacities within a university context.
A good command of English is required. KU Leuven provides courses in academic English.
