The Science & Technology Group, Faculty of Engineering Science, Department of Mechanical Engineering, campus Arenberg at KU Leuven, currently has a vacancy for a full-time senior academic staff member in the field of manufacturing of integrated, smart products based on hybrid processes. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with excellent research records and with educational competences in the field of manufacturing systems and manufacturing technology.

Mechanical Engineering, being one of the oldest engineering disciplines, is showing more vitality than ever before. Questions on the sustainability of energy supply, the mobility problem in our main agglomerations, healthcare for an ageing population and safeguarding our welfare by continuing industrial innovation, point to the major challenges our society is facing. The Mechanical Engineering Department is already “making” the future by creating solutions fulfilling the needs of our future society. We do this by addressing these challenges in research but, perhaps even more, by preparing the future generations of engineers. The Department has a staff of about 400 strong, including ca. 50 full-time professors. The Department is involved in a large number of research projects and is also well connected to the industry interfaces of the University and to government-sponsored technology transfer institutes at Flemish and European levels. Over the years, the Department has accumulated a unique research infrastructure supporting our research. The Department is particularly active in spin-off creation, illustrating the socioeconomic relevance of our research. Many of these spin-offs are technology leaders in their fields and their products and services have world-wide reputation.
In recent years, the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been systematically ranked high in terms of research and education by independent accreditation commissions. The department has an extensive national and international network in both academia and industry .
The research unit Manufacturing, which will host the activities of the candidate, can build on a solid research infrastructure, an extensive international network of strategic cooperation agreements with companies , a steady supply of talented doctoral students and a collegial working environment.
Detailed profile description
More efficient products and more efficient production systems are a permanent trend in technological developments. However, the approach to those goals is tending towards higher integrations levels of technologies, materials and processes.
More efficient products are obtained by integrating more functionality into a single product or component. Higher functional integration might require more complex part geometry (e.g. integrated hinges, integrated actuation by e.g. shape memory alloys, etc.). It also may require variation in material composition inside a single component (e.g. gradient porosity inside a component, inclusion of metallic inserts when injection molding a polymer component, development of functionally gradient materials, etc.).
Manufacturing those highly integrated products calls for new ways of producing such components. This may be achieved by developing new production techniques (e.g. two-component injection molding, multi-material laser welding/brazing or ultrasonic joining, multi-material additive manufacturing, etc.). Another approach is combining more conventional manufacturing processes into one and the same machine tool: e.g. integrating laser machining into a metal cutting machining centre (either for laser-assisted metal cutting or for sequential metal cutting and laser drilling or laser hardening), integrating EDM and milling for efficient tool making, integrating milling and incremental forming, integrating additive manufacturing (e.g. laser cladding) and subtractive manufacturing (e.g. milling, laser ablation, ...) and post-processing (laser hardening, laser polishing, ...). Machine tools can be conceived for ‘in-process’ insertion or assembly of e.g. electric devices, sensors, actuators, fibers, wires, gears or any element made from another material than the main material.
Developing integrated products and production processes finds applications in many domains, typically in high added-value components for medical and high-tech industry.
- You develop a research programme at an international level in the domain of the vacancy and according to the vision formulated above.
- You strengthen existing research lines and provide complementary expertise.
- You work together closely with the members of the research unit and you set up collaborations within and outside of the department.
- You support national and international collaborations of the research group and help promote and further develop these. You also actively assist in the development of the group’s future research projects.
- You are capable of acquiring competitive funding for fundamental and applied research
- You strive for excellence in your research and provide a contribution to the continued development of the research group.
- You publish at the highest scientific level and supervise PhDs at an international level.
- You give the necessary attention to the valorisation in applied research.
You ensure high-quality education within the area of mechanical engineering and in particular of manufacturing processes and systems, with a clear commitment for the quality of the programme as a whole. You also contribute to the pedagogic project of the faculty through the supervision of master theses and as a promoter of PhD students.
You develop your teachings in accordance with KU Leuven’s vision on activating and researched-based education and make use of the possibilities for the educationalist professionalization offered by the faculty and the university.
The candidate is expected to gradually take up a teaching load in undergraduate courses related to Manufacturing Processes and graduate courses such as Advanced Manufacturing Processes and/or CAD/CAM, CAPP, Virtual Product Development, ...
Your teaching task is determined in consultation and based on your specific profile. The scope of this is limited in the first years of your appointment. In your further career, the faculty pays a great deal of attention to the balance between research and teaching time.
The candidate is expected to contribute to scientific, societal, and internal service. Service to industry is particularly emphasized.
The candidate should hold a master degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent and should hold a Doctoral degree in one of the following areas or equivalent: Manufacturing Systems, Production Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with a strong affinity for production oriented aspects of product development (design for manufacturing). Broad knowledge of manufacturing processes in general is considered important for this vacancy. Interaction with colleagues focusing on additive manufacturing, composites, flexible forming and non-conventional material removal processes are anticipated.
You have a strong research profile. The quality of your research is proven by publications in leading journals. International experience is an important advantage.
You have demonstrable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.
You possess organisational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership capacities within a university context.
Proficiency in English is required. The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in administrative meetings.
Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch respectively English to the required standard.

Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor. In principle, junior researchers are appointed as assistant professor on the tenure track for a period of 5 years; after this period and a positive evaluation, they are permanently appointed (or tenured) as an associate professor.
