Occupation : Full-time
Place : Leuven
Apply no later than : September 30, 2015
In the Science, Engineering and Technology Group, Faculty of Engineering Science, Department of Mechanical Engineering, at KU Leuven is a full-time academic vacancy in the area of Additive Manufacturing. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent research record and with educational competence within the field of both classic and advanced production technologies.
24 2012 Additive Manufacturing
Mechanical Engineering, being one of the oldest engineering disciplines, is showing more vitality than ever before. Questions on the sustainability of energy supply, the mobility problem in our main agglomerations, healthcare for an ageing population, and safeguarding our welfare by continuing industrial innovation, point to the major challenges our society is facing. The Mechanical Engineering Department is already making the future by creating solutions fulfilling the needs of our future society. We do this by addressing these challenges in research but perhaps even more by preparing the future generations of engineers. An educational programme with emphasis on research-driven problem solving in socio-economic relevant fields is our major lever to a better future.
The department has a staff of 24 full-time professors, 250 researchers and over 400 bachelor and master students. The department is involved in a large number of research projects and is also well connected to the industry interfaces of the university and to technology transfer research institutes at Flemish and European level. Over the years, the department has accumulated a unique research infrastructure supporting our research, particularly in the field of manufacturing (CNC machines, EDM, laser beam machining, additive manufacturing, sheet metal working, quality control, etc.). The department is particularly active in spin-off creation (Materialise, LayerWise, Metris-Nikon Metrology, LMS, etc.). Many of these spin-offs are technology leaders in their fields, and their products and services have world reputation.
The manufacturing research group has acquired a top position in the domain of innovative manufacturing technology, more specifically with regards to non-conventional production techniques such as spark erosion, laser machining, rapid prototyping, additive manufacturing, flexible sheet metal working, multi-axis milling of complex geometries, micro-engineering, and production metrology. Today, KU Leuven is regionally one of the leading academic institutions in the field of manufacturing and considers this as one of its spearheads. An important motivation is the simple fact that the manufacturing industry (production of discrete goods) is the biggest industrial sector (both in added value/turnover and in employment) in Belgium. In that context, the Flemish government recently established a new strategic research centre for the manufacturing industry. In that centre, KU Leuven has an important role regarding the research on manufacturing technology.
You develop a research programme at an international level in new manufacturing technologies (advanced manufacturing), with an emphasis on the additive technologies and the use of new materials (polymers, metals, ceramics, composites, biomaterials, gradient and porous materials).
Special attention is to be paid to the different aspects: study of the processes, machine construction, monitoring and control, ICT aspects (CAD/CAM, control software, ...), materials, eco-production, production and process planning, quality control, and applications (precision machines, micro/nano, medical, aerospace, automotive, consumer goods, ...).
You strengthen existing research lines and provide additional expertise.
You maintain and set up collaborations within and outside of the department, e.g. with Sirris (sirris.be), and other important, mostly international research institutes in the field of production engineering, and with regional and international companies, including the spin-offs Materialise,LayerWise and others.
You strive for excellence in your research and thusly provide a contribution to the continued development of the regional and international character of the research group.
You publish at the highest scientific level, acquire resources for fundamental and applied research, develop international collaborations and supervise PhDs at an international level.
You ensure high-quality education within the Faculty of Engineering Science, at first within the area of general and advanced production engineering, with a clear commitment for the quality of the programme as a whole. You also contribute to the pedagogic project of the faculty/university through the supervision of master theses and as a promoter of PhD students.
You develop your teachings in accordance with KU Leuven’s vision on activating and researched-based education and make use of the possibilities for the educationalist professionalization offered by the faculty and the university.
Scientific, social and internal services in the field of existing and new research expertise are also part of your job.
Together with your research assignment you provide support for industry in close cooperation with all other actors.
You have a PhD in engineering science. You have a strong affinity with the field of manufacturing. Industrial experience is considered as a bonus.
You have a strong research profile in the field of the vacancy. The quality of your research is demonstrated by publications in prominent and international journals and through international research experience.
You have demonstrable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.
You possess organisational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership capacities within a university context.
A good command of English is required. KU Leuven provides courses in academic English.
The administrative and educational language at KU Leuven is Dutch. If, at your appointment, you do not speak Dutch at all or do not speak it well, KU Leuven will provide a training offer that must equip you to be able to teach in Dutch within three years. If your teaching assignment is completely in a language other than Dutch, then it is expected that you have mastered the Dutch language to a level that will allow you to participate in the administrative meetings.
We are offering a full-time employment in an intellectually challenging environment. KU Leuvenis a research-intensive, internationally oriented university that carries out both fundamental and applied scientific research. It is highly inter- and multidisciplinarily focused and strives for international excellence. In this regard, it actively works together with research partners in Belgium and abroad. It provides its students with an academic education that is based on high-quality scientific research.
You will work in Leuven, a historic, dynamic and lively city located in the heart of Belgium, within 20 minutes from Brussels, the capital of the European Union, and less than two hours from Paris, London and Amsterdam. You will work at the biggest university of Belgium.
Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor. In principle, junior researchers are appointed as assistant professor on the tenure track for a period of 5 years; after this period and a positive evaluation, they are permanently appointed (or tenured) as an associate professor.
Please explain your vision of research and education in your motivation letter.
