Superconductivity at 100
The world-wide celebration of Superconductivity at 100, marking the one
hundreth anniversary of the discovery of superconductivity in Leiden on April
8,1911, provides an excellent opportunity for ICAM branches and their partners
to share information and organize joint activities in connection with this unique
event. All institutions with strong programs in superconductivity are
encouraged to establish special SC at 100 web sites, and to link these to the
ICAM site, http://icam-i2cam.org/index.php/outreach/SC100/…., that provides:
- Information on upcoming events associated with SC at 100, be these departmental colloquia, symposia at major meetings, lecture-demonstrations for high school or middle school students, exhibits at science museums, etc.
- Postings of videos of outstanding public lectures on sc at 100
- As these become available, postings of interviews with leading researchers on SC at 100
Below we list the SC at 100 web sites and planned activities in the US and at ICAM branches of which we are presently aware. To add your web site, local branch, or national activities to this list, please send the relevant information to “Denise Myrick” < .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) >
Web sites
- SupraDesign
A very fun collaboration on superconductivity between designers and physicists! Explore it in English or French.
The SupraDesign project is a partnership between the Ensci-Les ateliers and physicists from CNRS and the Université Paris Sud on the occasion of the Year of Superconductivity Supra2011 organized by the Institut de Physique of the CNRS. It was supported by la Mairie de Paris, Nexans, and Universcience.
- http://www.manipsupra.fr is a French wiki site established by Julien Bobroff that enables research scientists, teachers, and students in France to share ideas about superconductivity, demonstrations, exhibits, web sites, queries on basic concepts, etc. We are currently exploring the possibility of establishing a US or British counterpart.
- https://sites.google.com/site/edusupernet/ was established by Oskar Vafek and Vlad Dobrosavljevic as the wiki home of eLabs, a teacher scientist network. It contains information, demonstrations, and lectures on superconductivity.
- http://www.ifw-dresden.de/offers/downloads/flyer/ is the IFW outreach site on which one may find a video of a levitating train.
- Coming soon to ICAM’s virtual science center, http://emergentunvierse.org will be a wing containing online interactive exhibits on superconductivity
