Overview
This event will bring together senior and junior scientists to tackle topics at the forefront of current research into quantum materials, while also providing pedagogical background and practical training for junior scientists. The program begins with a school during which graduate students and post-docs receive instruction in quantum materials synthesis and characterization, followed by a weekend workshop during which students present posters, and senior researchers present talks on recent developments . An essential characteristic will be the interdisciplinary and diverse crowd, which will include physicists, chemists, and materials scientists. The workshop will explicitly cover both the preparation of quantum materials as well as the underlying electronic backbone , serving as a forum for the exchange of ideas between experimentalists and theorists , and dedicating several days to to pics that receive limited attention at other conferences. This unique environment will catalyze cross-disciplinary collaboration and inspire new research directions.

The school will span 4 days, from Monday through Thursday, and will cover different techniques of material synthesis and characterization. Mornings will be spent on tutorials with practicing scientists, while afternoons will be devoted to practical demonstrations of techniques at laboratories in the University of Maryland physics and chemistry departments. Anticipated topics include: sintering, arc melting, molten metal flux, vapor transport, vertical Bridgman, and pulsed laser deposition. Also, lectures and demonstrations of basic sample characterization will be offered, including x-ray and neutron diffraction. Students will leave with a basic functional knowledge of how to plan and carry out synthesis relevant to the study of quantum materials.
The workshop will span 3 days, from Friday through Sunday, and will cover both experimental and theoretical investigations into quantum materials. The format will provide for discussions of the presented material and student involvement will be encouraged. Talks will be recorded and broadcast.
